Summer HVAC Checklist

Is Your HVAC System Ready for Summer?

As winter gives way to spring, we here at Jay Mechanical Inc. want you to be prepared. Your HVAC unit is one of the most important parts of your home and, with summer approaching, it is important that your system is prepared. As we all know, summer is a time for outdoor fun, family barbeques, and intense, oppressive heat. One of the few respites from this heat is the sweet relief brought about by air conditioning. However, what if you air conditioner isn’t ready to fight this battle? What if, over the winter, your air conditioner was suffering in silence, desperately in need of some tender love and care? In today’s post, we are going to list out a few things you need to check up on to ensure that your HVAC unit is ready to take on that summer heat.

Your Air Conditioner Needs Your Help

While you may feel that your air conditioner is perfectly ready to take on the hardships of summer, we still feel that you should check the following items before summer sets in.

  • Air Ducts: While this particular suggestion is not going to help your actual air conditioning unit, it can increase the efficiency with which your unit cools your home. Air ducts, like anything else in a home, tend to get a little dirty. All of this dust and debris can impede the flow of air and, in some cases, can cause the air quality of your home to be rather poor. Before summer sets in, have your air ducts looked at to determine if they need a thorough cleaning or not.
  • AC Maintenance: If it has been over a year since you have last had your air conditioner service, now is the perfect time to have it looked at. Contact an HVAC specialist, like those at Jay Mechanical Inc., and schedule a maintenance check for your AC unit. Trust us, it is much better to determine if there is an issue now than to have a problem occur when the outside temperature is in the 90s. During the maintenance check, the technician should check to make sure that the refrigerant level is correct, clean any and all debris that has accumulated inside the unit, and should inspect the coils to make sure there are no leaks or damaged spots.
  • Air Purifiers: Again, while this particular suggestion isn’t directly related to how well your AC unit cools your home, it is still something that needs to be considered. With spring and summer fast approaching, pollen is about to get out of control. While most people have learned to deal with pollen outside of their homes, no one wants to come home to a house full of yellow dust. Replacing or cleaning your air filters is a great way to ensure that your home remains pollen free, increasing both your health and your happiness.
